Joe Butler was one of the founding members of the MAKO Fly Fishers. During the first year, the club had a rocky start with growing pains and turmoil. After some founding members abruptly left it was unsure if the club would continue. Joe stepped up and assumed the role of President and organized a membership drive to get people interested in the club. Membership grew and Joe was instrumental in creating the idea of club outings to promote involvement, keeping members involved and providing an opportunity for fun and fellowship. He arranged to have guest speakers at our monthly meetings which was key to keep members interested in attending. He researched ideas on how the club could get involved in conservation projects, with his efforts being rewarded at the Federation of Fly Fishers annual conclave in Mountain Home, Arkansas where the MAKO Fly Fishers were presented with the Conservation Award. Joe was an outstanding fly caster and was a certified casting instructor by the Federation. Joe tragically passed away in 2004 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. His name was added to this award the following year. Without his dedication during MAKO’s formative years it is very likely the club wouldn’t exist today.
